You meet the most interesting people...
…when you sit around the fire at MTBCity.
After 20 years and 43 countries of world travel, I was tired. I’d made outdoor TV Shows in some of the most beautiful and wild corners of the planet. I’d share campfires with fascinating people that shared my passion for conservation. But the fact was, I was tired. I was tired of air travel and missing my friends and family. I was tired but I didn’t want to give up campfires with interesting people. So we made our own.
We built MTBCity in order to keep a campfire for the next generation of wanderers fascinated by nature. The campfire is the heart of the camp, ours and any other. It is the ancient gathering place to share wisdom and laughter. Out here we call it “Cowboy Television”. Our fire here is my favorite place on Earth and can be surrounded by citizens of a half dozen countries on any evening.
Some of the most memorable evenings have been with:
The two Dutch couples that road here from El Paso, TX. They wanted to swim immediately so we took them to Spring Meadow and before we knew it one was diving in nude.
The French couple that rode here from Alaska. We made them a lunch when they were prepping to leave and when we told them the summer sausage was from a bear I harvested were stoked because they wanted to try bear since arriving in North America.
Quiet Wolfgang from Germany that came for a night and was here 5 days later.
The two young Scottish riders whose laughter filled the night air over Spring Meadow Park.
The Polish man that told the story of arriving in Canada decades earlier living on $7 a day and is now a successful business man supporting his kids riding all over the place.
This is to say nothing of all the quiet bikepackers that arrive, pitch their tent, rest and move on without us meeting them. We asked for it and we got it. Interesting pilgrims from around the world looking for a quiet place to rest. We’re the keepers of the fire now.
We’d like to thank Adventure Cycling in Missoula, Montana for adding MTBCity to their app and bringing these great people to our fire.
